Opportunity

“I learned that I can do whatever I put my mind to.” – Soelma (13)WiredWoods camper

So you think you know Adobe Photoshop?
Can you teach an at-risk 12-year-old how to make a digital self-portrait?

Know HTML? No problem?
Can you teach an 11-year-old with literacy challenges how to code her own web page in Notepad?

Do you enjoy summer camp and the outdoors?
Are you willing to teach technology in a log cabin?

Do you have the desire to empower at-risk kids by challenging them to achieve what others, including themselves, doubt that they can achieve in today’s digital age?

If you answered yes to ALL of these questions, then WiredWoods and Crossroads for Kids want YOU to accept what should be a very rewarding challenge this summer.

Come to summer camp and teach at-risk kids digital imagery and web design, all from inside a wired wooden cabin!

Wired Woods

A WiredWoods camper works on her web site.

The Program

WiredWoods (www.wiredwoods.org) has developed a proven, innovative curriculum that teaches youth how to be creators rather than just consumers of technology. This program is offered as part of established summer camps and after-school programs.

In 2005, WiredWoods will run its innovative curriculum in partnership with Crossroads for Kids (www.crossroads4kids.org) at two well-established overnight camps for at-risk youth – Camp Wing (Duxbury, MA) and Camp Mitton (Brewster, MA). Through innovative social, recreational and educational programs, Crossroads for Kids empowers youth at risk to achieve success regardless of their environment.

The Position

WiredWoods and Crossroads are looking for instructors and counselors for both camps. Responsibilities could include:

  • Work as a team with experienced teachers to teach at-risk children during daily 1-2 hour sessions.
  • Manage the computer network to ensure the campers have a positive experience.
  • Support the camp staff in their use of the computers.
  • Act as a full-time counselor, fully integrated into camp life – cabin responsibility, meals and activities such as camp service project, evening program and special events

This will be a demanding full-time job for 9 weeks (approximately June 15 - August 20) including orientation and training. Specific dates will be determined by camp location. Everyone will live in group camp housing, eat camp meals and participate in camp activities.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have:

  1. Enthusiasm for working with at-risk youth.
  2. Experience in digital photography and graphics, especially working knowledge of Photoshop.
  3. Experience with HTML as well as web design (GoLive/Dreamweaver), animation (LiveMotion/Flash) and/or audio editing (CoolEdit/Audition).
  4. Experience with technology-based instruction of middle school aged youth in a formal or informal setting a plus.
  5. Experience in an overnight camp environment.
  6. Interest in contributing to an informal, camp community.

Proposed Salary and Benefits

Commensurate with experience plus food, housing, and 1 paid day-off per week.
