Curriculum Goals
Children consume technology and media every
day; they watch cable TV, look at their favorite Web sites,
use cell phones and beepers, download music, and play computer
games. The balance to this consumption is active production,
using the same technology to create, publish, and communicate.
The WiredWoods program is designed to spark
a passion for learning about and creating with technology
in underserved middle-school children as part of their in-school,
after-school or summer program. In the WiredWoods studio,
they will learn how to create Web sites that are uniquely
their own. In the process, they will feel a strong sense
of pride and accomplishment, gaining a new perspective on
themselves and their opportunities.
This curriculum supports WiredWoods’ goals by
providing teachers with a framework and activities to design
experiences that give learners the opportunities to:
- Improve their technology skills;
- Experience designing,
planning, and managing projects (Web site development);
- Work
successfully in collaborative groups;
- Take pride in their
work and accomplishments;
- Respect and admire each other’s
work.
