Girls Get Connected “Truth
and the Image”
On March 6 th 2004 , over 160 girls
participated in the Fourth Annual Girls Get Connected
Conference at Simmons College ().
WiredWoods teacher and manager, Lisa Radden , ran two
1.5 hour sessions with eight middle school girls. In
the morning, the girls were taught how to tell a fictional
story by manipulating photographs. Using Adobe Photoshop,
each girl combined an image taken of themselves with
an image of a place they had never been before, and
were able to create “realistic” photographs!
In the afternoon, the girls returned and learned how
to change the appearance of a model using tools in
Photoshop. At the end of the day, each girl had developed
a “critical eye” of the images in the media
they are exposed to, and were able to question the
validity of the advertisements and the reality of the
portrayal of models in magazines.
